Design Project I: All Terrain Trailer

During my first design class, I worked on a project that involved creating a functional design from concept to prototype. The process included documentation, testing, iteration, and ultimately delivering a complete prototype with supporting materials. The goal of the class was to design a trailer that could traverse a set course while balancing a 5lb weight on its uppermost surface. My design utilized compliant wheels and a spring suspension system to successfully carry the payload all the way. My design was the only one which carried the payload all the way. Part of the challenge was design communication: We were not allowed to build our own designs, but each student was assigned a contractor and after creating a drawing package and work instructions, we sent the design off to the contractor to have it built. This brought to a head, although in a low stakes environment, the dilemma of having to design something that can actually be built.
